Aerial view of Frankfurt-Hahn Airport in the Hunsrück hills, start of a private transfer to Frankfurt

Despite its name, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport is not in Frankfurt. It lies in the Hunsrück hills in Rhineland-Palatinate, about 120 km west of Frankfurt – roughly 1 hour 20 minutes by car. There is no train station; you reach it by bus, car or private transfer. Many travellers only find this out after booking a cheap flight, so plan your journey before you fly.

Hahn Airport at a glance

  • IATA code: HHN (Frankfurt Airport is FRA – don’t confuse them when booking!)
  • Location: near Lautzenhausen, Hunsrück, between the Moselle and Rhine valleys
  • Main airlines: low-cost carriers, mainly Ryanair and Wizz Air
  • Distance: ~120 km to Frankfurt city, ~105 km to Frankfurt Airport (FRA), ~75 km to Mainz, ~70 km to Koblenz
  • Train: none – the nearest major rail stations are Mainz and Koblenz

Live departures and arrivals are published on the official Hahn Airport website.

Option 1: Bus

Airport coaches (Flibco) connect Hahn with Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof and Frankfurt Airport, with stops in Mainz. A local bus line goes to Koblenz. Timetables follow the flight schedule, so buses are less frequent on quiet days. Book online to secure a seat, and check what happens if your flight is delayed – the last bus may not wait.

Option 2: Drive and park

From Frankfurt you take the A60 past Mainz and then the A61/B50 into the Hunsrück. There are car parks at the terminal; pre-booking online is usually cheaper. Remember that you’ll pay parking for every day of your trip.

Option 3: Private transfer (fixed price)

A private transfer is the most practical choice when:

  • your flight lands late in the evening and buses have stopped,
  • you are 3–7 people – one van often costs less per person than individual bus tickets plus a taxi at the end,
  • you need to connect between Hahn and Frankfurt Airport (FRA) on the same day,
  • you travel with children, ski gear or lots of luggage.

Veloria Ride picks you up anywhere in the Rhine-Main area – Frankfurt, Mainz, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Rüsselsheim – and drives you to the Hahn terminal. On arrival, the driver tracks your flight and waits in the arrivals hall. See prices and book on our Frankfurt-Hahn transfer page.

How early should I leave for Hahn?

Hahn is a small airport, so security is usually quick. But the drive is long and can be slowed by fog or snow in the Hunsrück in winter. From Frankfurt, we recommend departure about 3.5 hours before your flight; from Mainz about 3 hours.

Cheap flights from Hahn – what’s the catch?

Fares from Hahn can be low, but add the cost and time of getting there. For a family of four, two bus legs or two long taxi rides can cancel out the saving. Calculate the full trip – or ask us for a fixed transfer price before you book the flight.
