One of Germany's oldest cities

Worms has more than 2,000 years of history. The Romanesque Cathedral of St. Peter is one of the great imperial cathedrals on the Rhine. In 1521 Martin Luther stood before Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms, an event commemorated by the large Luther Monument. Together with Speyer and Mainz, the Jewish heritage sites of Worms – including the synagogue quarter and the ancient Holy Sand cemetery – became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021.

In summer, the Nibelungen Festival stages theatre in front of the cathedral, and the Backfischfest on the Rhine is one of the region's biggest folk festivals.
